Dear Parents and Students
On behalf of all the staff of Punggol Secondary School, I would like to welcome everyone to the start of the new school term. To parents whose child has just joined the school, we warmly welcome you and your child to our Punggol family.
Year 2007 has been an exciting and fruitful year for both students and teachers. The school received our third MOE Academic Value-Added Award (Bronze) for the good 'O' level performance of our 2006 batch of Secondary 4 Express students. We are also especially proud of our sterling CCA achievements and awards, in particular, our Scouts (Gold), NCC (Silver), NPCC (Silver), Guzheng (Silver) as well as our Volleyball, Table Tennis and Shooting for achieving National Top 4 positions.
I would like to take this opportunity to update parents on some of the new initiatives that your child can look forward to in 2008
On Mondays, school will start at 9.15am for all students. Common tests for Sec 1 to Sec 3 will be scheduled during the first period on Mondays. Students can continue to wake up early and have time for a quick revision in the morning before their tests. The school will be open from 7.00am for students who would like to do their revision in school. Teachers will be in school before 7.30am and make use of their time before the start of class to work on curriculum research and lesson designs to support the school's Teach Less Learn More initiative.
The school will be tapping on digital technology to enhance our Music programme for Sec 1 and 2. Our students will have a chance to learn 2 musical instruments (Guitar and Keyboard) as well as music composing using digital technology. Our students will acquire music appreciation through the learning of musical instruments and progress forward to music composing using digital technology. This will enhance our students' love of music and promote creativity and musical talents in our students.
The school will be starting the Modular System for the above subjects for Sec 1 and 2 students. This modular system allows our students to focus on fewer subjects per semester. By having fewer subjects per semester, students will have more lesson hours per week and thus be able to give more focus to these subjects. At the end of each semester, students will sit for the Semestral Exam for these subjects. As the exams would be spread out over the year, students would have fewer subjects to prepare at the year end exams.
The school will be tapping on a new source of funding provided by the MOE, the Internationalisation Fund to provide overseas experience for students. The school hopes to provide an overseas experience for every student in school to broaden their global outlook and learn more about the world. Students can look forward to interacting with foreign students in international competitions, exhibitions, conferences, community involvement projects and cultural performances.
The school will continue to leverage on our school MASS-SMS system to improve communication with parents. Our MASS-SMS will be used to keep parents informed of major school events and as a convenient means to keep in touch with our parents. We strongly urge all parents to keep the school updated on their contactable handphone number.
Common tests are scheduled on every Monday for Sec 1 to 3 students. These Common Tests constitute 60% of the total assessment score for student promotion to the next higher level. We need parents' support in ensuring their child put in their best effort in the preparation for these Common Tests. The Common Tests aim to help reduce exam stress and encourage our students to be regular and consistent in their revision and preparation for the main exams.
Many of our initiatives have proven to be beneficial to our students' learning and growth. We are confident that, with the continued support from our parents, students and our external partners, the school will continue to progress and fulfill our mission of providing a meaningful and enjoyable school experience to students.
Best RegardsMdm Lee Eet Fong, Principal
